The ESG procedure, used alongside lifestyle and diet changes, is intended to help you lose weight and in turn help prevent or improve many health problems that are associated with excess body weight, including:
Gastric balloon is a nonsurgical, outpatient procedure that promotes weight loss by restricting food intake. Through endoscopy, a surgeon places a silicone balloon that is about the size of a grapefruit or a softball into the stomach, making the patient feel fuller faster after a meal.
During the approximately 30-minute outpatient procedure under sedation, a silicone gastric balloon is delivered by an endoscope through the patient’s mouth, into their stomach. The balloon is inflated with saline solution to partially fill the stomach, leaving less room for large amounts of food and liquids. The balloon is then retrieved after 6 months.
These procedures are available to people whose body mass index (BMI) is above 30, who haven’t been successful in maintaining weight loss with lifestyle modification alone.
The procedures are not currently covered by most health insurance.
Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that leads to significant weight loss. It helps you lose weight by limiting how much you can eat. The procedures takes around one to two hours. Although ESG does not entail surgical incisions, it is performed under general anesthesia. ESG is an outpatient procedure and most patients return home the same day. Patients can return to work and resume daily activity in one to three days and can expect a full recovery in 3-4 weeks. When combined with lifestyle modification, endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty results in about 15% to 20% total body weight loss at 12 to 24 months.
