Revisional bariatric surgery in South Florida may help patients experiencing weight regain, severe reflux, swallowing problems, Lap-Band complications, or other concerns after a previous weight-loss procedure. At Florida Surgery & Weight Loss Center in Hollywood, FL, Sergey Terushkin, MD, FACS, FASMBS, evaluates both surgical and endoscopic revision options—with insurance verification support and self-pay pathways available.

A personalized second look at your first procedure

Revisional Bariatric Surgery in Hollywood & South Florida

Weight regain or complications after bariatric surgery do not mean that you failed. Anatomy, metabolism, symptoms, and medical needs can change over time. A careful evaluation can identify what changed and whether a revision could improve health, comfort, or weight-management support.

Already had surgery somewhere else? We evaluate patients whose original sleeve, gastric bypass, or Lap-Band procedure was performed at another practice or outside the United States.

Reasons revisional bariatric surgery may be needed, including weight regain, severe reflux, anatomical changes, and Lap-Band complications
Revision planning begins by identifying the reason for weight regain, discomfort, or complications.
Reasons to request an evaluation

When Is Bariatric Revision Considered?

A bariatric revision surgeon evaluates symptoms, original anatomy, weight history, nutrition, and prior operative records before recommending treatment.

Weight Regain or Limited Weight Loss

A stretched pouch, enlarged gastric outlet, behavioral or metabolic factors, or a procedure that no longer provides enough support may contribute.

Severe Reflux After Gastric Sleeve

Persistent GERD, esophagitis, or a hiatal hernia may require additional testing and discussion of sleeve-to-bypass conversion.

Lap-Band Problems

Band slippage, erosion, intolerance, port problems, vomiting, reflux, or difficulty swallowing may lead to removal or conversion.

Stricture, Ulcer, or Anatomical Concern

Pain, food intolerance, repeated vomiting, narrowing, or other postoperative concerns require individualized assessment.

Surgical and endoscopic pathways

Revisional Weight-Loss Surgery Options

The right option depends on your original procedure, current anatomy, symptoms, health risks, and treatment goals.

Lap-Band Removal or Conversion

The band and port can be removed. Depending on anatomy and scar tissue, conversion to gastric sleeve surgery or bypass may be discussed as a one-stage or staged plan.

Gastric Sleeve to Bypass

Conversion to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass may be considered for selected patients with severe reflux, inadequate weight loss, weight regain, or another anatomical concern.

Gastric Bypass Revision

Options may include revision of the pouch or connection, correction of a complication, or another carefully selected surgical approach.

Endoscopic Revision or TORe

For selected patients after gastric bypass, transoral outlet reduction may tighten an enlarged outlet without external incisions. Eligibility requires endoscopic and clinical evaluation.

Robert 150 pounds down six years after revisional bariatric surgery with Dr. Sergey Terushkin in Hollywood Florida
Robert is six years out from revisional bariatric surgery and 150 pounds down. Individual results vary, and this outcome does not guarantee a particular amount or timeline of weight loss.
A long-term revisional bariatric surgery result

Robert: 150 Pounds Down Six Years After Revision

Robert is six years out from his revisional bariatric procedure and has lost 150 pounds. His long-term progress shows what may be possible when the right revision is paired with continued medical follow-up and sustainable lifestyle changes.

The goals of revision may include correcting a complication, reducing reflux or food intolerance, restoring restriction, improving weight-management support, or protecting long-term health.

Results vary according to the original surgery, revision performed, anatomy, medical conditions, nutrition, activity, and follow-up. Revision does not guarantee the same response as a first bariatric procedure.

After substantial weight loss and once weight is stable, some patients also seek panniculectomy surgery in South Florida to remove a symptomatic abdominal apron. This is a separate procedure with its own medical and insurance evaluation.

A careful work-up comes before the procedure

Your Bariatric Revision Evaluation

Because previous surgery changes normal anatomy, revision planning may require more information than a primary bariatric consultation.

  • Medical and surgical history: symptoms, weight history, medications, and prior operative reports.
  • Upper GI imaging: may identify reflux, narrowing, hiatal hernia, pouch changes, or other anatomical concerns.
  • Upper endoscopy: may evaluate the pouch, outlet, esophagus, ulcers, inflammation, or band erosion.
  • Laboratory and nutrition review: checks deficiencies and preparation for safe treatment.
  • Insurance requirements: documentation, supervised programs, and prior authorization vary by plan.
  • Personalized recommendation: surgery, endoscopic treatment, medical management, or continued observation.
Options with and without insurance

Revisional Bariatric Surgery Insurance Coverage & Self-Pay

With Insurance

Coverage may be available when a revision is medically necessary—for example, to address severe reflux, band erosion or slippage, stricture, persistent vomiting, or another documented complication. Benefits, exclusions, BMI rules, prior authorization, and required records vary by plan.

Without Bariatric Coverage

Patients without coverage can ask about current self-pay options and available financing. The final cost depends on the procedure, facility, anesthesia, testing, and complexity of the revision.

Insurance verification is not a guarantee of payment. Plans such as Aetna, Florida Blue/Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Humana, UnitedHealthcare, and Medicare may have different networks and medical-necessity requirements. Our team can review your specific benefits.

Questions about revision surgery

Revisional Bariatric Surgery FAQs

Am I a candidate for revisional bariatric surgery?

You may need an evaluation if you have substantial weight regain, limited weight loss, severe reflux, persistent vomiting, difficulty swallowing, Lap-Band complications, or another concern after bariatric surgery. Candidacy depends on your anatomy, symptoms, health, and treatment goals—not one number alone.

Is revision surgery riskier than primary bariatric surgery?

Revision can be more complex because scar tissue and altered anatomy may increase operative difficulty and complication risk. Your surgeon will review the expected benefits, alternatives, and individual risks before recommending a procedure.

Does insurance cover bariatric revision?

Insurance may cover revision when medical-necessity criteria are met. Coverage for weight regain alone varies and may be excluded by some plans. Benefit verification and prior authorization are required.

Can Dr. Terushkin revise surgery performed elsewhere?

Yes. The center evaluates patients whose original operation was performed by another surgeon, in another state, or outside the United States. Prior records are helpful but not always available.

What is the difference between TORe and surgical revision?

TORe is an endoscopic procedure performed through the mouth to reduce an enlarged gastric bypass outlet in selected patients. Surgical revision uses laparoscopic or robotic access to change or repair the anatomy. The right approach depends on the problem being treated.

Can a Lap-Band be removed and converted to another procedure?

Yes, selected patients may be candidates for band removal with conversion to sleeve or bypass. Depending on inflammation and scar tissue, treatment may occur in one operation or be separated into stages.

How long is recovery after bariatric revision?

Recovery varies by procedure and medical complexity. Endoscopic treatment is often outpatient, while surgical revision may require hospital observation and a longer return to normal activity. Your surgeon will provide instructions for your specific plan.

How much weight can I lose after revision surgery?

Results vary and are often different from the response after a first bariatric operation. The reason for revision, chosen procedure, nutrition, activity, health conditions, and follow-up all influence the outcome.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I cannot recommend Dr. Terushkin and his team enough! From my very first consultation through my recovery, I felt genuinely cared for every step of the way. From the moment I arrived at the hospital on June 18 for my panniculectomy, I knew I was in great hands. The entire experience was organized, welcoming, and professional, it honestly felt like boarding a cruise ship. Every member of the surgical team made me feel comfortable, safe, and confident that I was receiving the best possible care. Dr. Terushkin is an exceptional surgeon. His professionalism, expertise, and attention to detail exceeded my expectations. My panniculectomy results have been amazing. After losing a significant amount of weight, this surgery has truly been life-changing. I feel healthier, more comfortable, and more confident than I have in years. It has given me a new sense of freedom and has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. A special thank you to Jesus, the coordinator, who made the entire process seamless. He was always kind, responsive, and patient, making sure all of my questions were answered and that I felt supported every step of the way. The front desk staff was equally amazing. Everyone was warm, welcoming, and genuinely cared about their patients. One moment that I’ll never forget was having my drains removed. The young lady at the front desk stepped in to assist the nurse practitioner and held my hand the entire time, comforting and reassuring me. She helped ease my anxiety so much that before I knew it, my drains were out, and I barely felt a thing. That level of compassion speaks volumes about the culture of this practice. The care I received before, during, and after surgery was truly outstanding. Every person I encountered treated me with kindness, respect, and genuine compassion. It’s rare to find a medical team that combines exceptional surgical skill with such heartfelt patient care. Thank you, Dr. Terushkin, Jesus, and the entire team, for helping me begin this new chapter with confidence. I am beyond grateful for my experience and my results, and I wholeheartedly recommend this practice to anyone considering a panniculectomy or any other procedure. You will be in the best hands.
